Day 5: Ambition vs. Excellence — Lessons from Nimrod and the Tower of Babel (365 Steps with God)

The story of Nimrod and the Tower of Babel teaches us to align our ambitions with God’s purpose. Reflect on the importance of striving for excellence, trusting His plans, and building a life that glorifies Him.

A Quick Recap
In our journey through the Bible, we’ve seen God’s covenant with Noah and the lessons of obedience and trust. Today, we close the Early World period by reflecting on the generations after Noah, the story of Nimrod, and the Tower of Babel. These passages reveal the dangers of misplaced ambition and the blessings of living for God’s glory.
Dear Chloe,
Hi, sweetheart!
Today, we read Genesis 10–11 and Psalm 2. These chapters introduced us to Nimrod, described as a mighty man, and the infamous Tower of Babel.
At first glance, Nimrod and the tower’s builders seem impressive, but their stories highlight a critical difference between ambition and excellence.
These lessons are as relevant today as they were back then. Let’s uncover them together!
Lesson 1: Ambition Can Lead Us Astray
Nimrod is described as a “mighty hunter before the Lord,” but his legacy reveals a darker side of ambition. Ancient commentaries suggest his “before the Lord” could mean “against the Lord.” Nimrod’s drive to build kingdoms and control others may have been fueled by self-interest rather than God’s purpose.
What This Means for You, Chloe:
God doesn’t discourage ambition, but He asks us to aim for His purposes, not selfish gains. Always ask, “Is this dream glorifying God?” or “Am I chasing something just for myself?” Your heart’s intention is what matters most.
For Moms:
Minsan, ang dami nating pangarap para sa ating mga pamilya, and that’s beautiful. Pero alalahanin natin, hindi masama ang mangarap basta kasama si Lord. Let's guide our kids by showing them how to trust God’s plans over personal ambition.
Building a Life That Glorifies God
A final thought before we wrap up:
Chloe accomplishments are not for personal fame but about building a life that honors God’s purpose. Strive for excellence with love for Him as your motivation. Like St. Francis de Sales said, “Be who you are and be that well.” Let your gifts shine for God’s glory, trusting that He will guide you every step of the way.
Love always,
Ninang

Lesson 2: Excellence Honors God
The Tower of Babel wasn’t just a building project, it symbolized humanity’s attempt to “make a name” for themselves. They sought their own glory instead of God’s. Chloe, there’s nothing wrong with building or creating something beautiful—think of the magnificent churches around the world built to glorify God! What matters is whether we’re using our talents to honor Him or to glorify ourselves.
What This Means for You, Chloe:
Excellence is about giving your best to God. Aim to do well not because you want people to praise you, but because it makes God happy. Think of how you feel when you’ve made something special for someone you love. It’s the same with God!
For Moms:
When we do things for our family, we often want everything to be perfect, from cooking to home projects. Pero moms, tandaan natin, hindi kailangang perfect basta buong pusong ibinigay. Even the smallest acts, done with love and prayer, are great in God’s eyes.
Lesson 3: Trust God’s Plans, Not Your Own
The Tower of Babel ends with God scattering humanity by confusing their language. While it may seem harsh, it was an act of mercy. God’s plans are always greater than ours. When we strive to control everything, we risk losing sight of His purpose. This reminds us to surrender our plans and trust that God’s ways lead to true joy and peace.
What This Means for You, Chloe:
Sometimes life doesn’t go the way we want it to, but that’s okay. God sees the bigger picture and knows what’s best. Trust Him, especially when things feel confusing. He’ll guide you to something better than you ever imagined.
For Moms:
Not all of our plans work out, and sometimes it can be so frustrating. Pero moms, baka may mas magandang plano si Lord para sa atin! So take a breath, keep praying, and trust Him. Just like in parenting, di ba? God has a plan even when we can’t see it right away.

Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we begin the story of Abram and Sarai, a couple whose journey of faith inspires generations. Chloe, I can’t wait to walk with you as we uncover the promises God made to them and how those promises shape His covenant with us today.
